My Journey to NLP4Kids:
From Foster Parent to Therapist
Hello, my name is Nicola McCay.
I currently live in Lifford, County Donegal, Ireland, with my husband Chris, two remarkable foster children and two beautiful black cocker spaniel dogs, Tilly and Darcey.
Having spent years helping children with their well-being as a Childline Counsellor and foster parent in my local area, I am now a registered NLP4Kids Practitioner. The journey from foster parent to therapist has been a rewarding and fulfilling one, and I am excited to share news of my venture with you all.
Why did I know NLP4Kids was right for me?
Choosing to become an NLP4Kids Practitioner aligned with my goals and values, especially the ability to help children and young people increase their confidence, overcome anxiety and learn practical techniques to manage their emotions and mental wellbeing. I knew NLP4Kids was right for me because my extensive experience working with young people has shown me firsthand the profound challenges they face. As a Childline Counsellor, I’ve provided support to children and teenagers grappling with social anxiety, depression, self-harm, addiction and more. My role as a foster parent has further deepened my understanding of these issues with attachment anxiety, low self-esteem and lack of confidence. These experiences have given me a unique perspective on the importance of effective, empathetic intervention.
I now specialise in supporting children and adolescents with anxiety and depression because I am deeply passionate about addressing the emotional struggles they face. Having worked extensively as a Childline Counsellor, I have seen firsthand how these challenges can impact a young person’s ability to manage their emotions, relationships, and self-esteem. Anxiety often overwhelms them with fear and worry, while depression leaves them feeling isolated, hopeless, and disconnected from their potential.
By using a combination of NLP and talking therapy, I help children break free from the limiting thought patterns that fuel their anxiety and depression. NLP allows them to reframe negative self-talk and shift their emotional responses, helping them to feel more in control. Talking therapy, on the other hand, provides a safe space for young people to explore their emotions and understand the root causes of their distress. Together, these techniques empower children to regulate their emotions, challenge harmful beliefs, and build resilience.
What drives me is the chance to make a meaningful impact on their emotional well-being. By focusing on anxiety and depression, I offer personalised support that not only helps them manage symptoms but also enables them to regain confidence, restore balance, and navigate their lives with greater ease and self-assurance.
The significant gap in services for young people in our area was a further reason for me to take this journey to start up my own therapeutic service in Lifford-Strabane that offers ONLINE and face-to-face support to our young people.
However, my desire to help others, especially children, by providing practical solutions to challenging issues is at the core of why NLP4Kids is the right choice for me!
